Nicotine vaping products

From 1 October 2021, consumers require a prescription for all purchases of nicotine vaping products, such as nicotine e-cigarettes, nicotine pods and liquid nicotine. This includes purchases from Australian pharmacies and from overseas. It remains illegal for other Australian retailers, such as tobacconists, 'vape' shops and convenience stores, to sell you nicotine vaping products, even if you have a prescription.

Need a referral?

We work closely with a number of TGA approved, Australian registered doctors who can prescribe nicotine products (including nicotine e-cigarettes, nicotine pods and liquid nicotine for vaping).
You may request to opt for a convenient telehealth consultation and have your prescription emailed directly to the pharmacy.

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) helps reduce or eliminate cravings for cigarettes and nicotine vaping by releasing nicotine into your bloodstream.

NRT is regarded as a "first-line" treatment for nicotine dependence, making it an excellent initial choice for those seeking medical assistance to quit smoking or vaping. When used correctly, NRT can significantly improve your chances of successfully quitting.

NRT is available in various forms, including:
  • Patches (applied to the skin)
  • Chewing gum
  • Lozenges
  • Mouth sprays
  • Inhalers
Many individuals find it beneficial to combine different types of NRT. For instance, you might use a daily nicotine patch alongside a nicotine inhaler or gum. Combining different NRT forms is often more effective than using just one.

Using NRT to quit smoking or vaping is less harmful than continuing to smoke or vape, so it is worth considering if you aim to quit. Most people can safely use NRT, but it’s important to consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

NRT can be purchased over the counter at pharmacies without a prescription. Additionally, nicotine patches are available through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) with a doctor's prescription.

Prescribed medications

In Australia, there are two types of prescription medications available to treat nicotine dependence for individuals aged 18 and over:
  • Varenicline
  • Bupropion
Both medications are taken orally as tablets and can only be obtained from a pharmacy with a doctor's prescription. They are typically not used simultaneously.

Varenicline is regarded as a "first-line" treatment for nicotine dependence from smoking. While bupropion is also effective in helping people quit smoking, it is considered less effective than varenicline and about as effective as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

The effectiveness of varenicline and bupropion for quitting vaping is currently uncertain.

Your doctor can help determine which medication is most appropriate for you.
